CEDRO also plays a significant social role, including benefits, training and promotion for authors and publishers.
CEDRO performs this role both directly and in cooperation with other bodies. In accordance with the Intellectual Property Act, 20% of royalties collected for private copies are allocated to funding CEDRO’s social function.
CEDRO’s social activity comprises:
- A collective insurance policy for author members. The policy covers death and disability. In 2006, the policy provided cover for 28 cases.
- An Individual Benefits Scheme providing benefits to writers, translators and journalists in situations of hardship. In 2006, 96 such aid packages were granted, mostly to authors forced out of work by illness who needed help at home or healthcare not covered by the INSALUD national health system.
- A telephone helpline for authors aged over 70.
CEDRO’s social role is complemented by over 180 annual activities in the fields of training and promotion, aimed at improving working conditions for authors and publishers and carried out in cooperation with authors’ and publishers’ associations and guilds.
In 2006, 187 projects and activities in cooperation with other organisations were set in motion:
- 16 legal, tax and technical advice activities,
- 20 Internet and Internet-access information services,
- 19 events and campaigns for the promotion and defence of creative endeavour, the book world and author’s copyright,
- 49 courses, workshops and seminars,
- 27 events at trade fairs and activities on the international stage. and
- 56 publications and studies: newsletters, annuals, catalogues, etc.
